1. What inspired you to take this unconventional path?
When I graduated college I would bounce around from office job to office job, constantly unsatisfied. I worked in marketing at my favorite magazine, public relations for a global brand, advertising for muliple brands–and all the jobs would capture my interest and then eventually become redudantant and devoid of passion.

I started thinking there has to be more to life than spending a third of it chained to a desk working at a passionless job you care little for.

Around this time, I had decided to travel to Colombia and was blown away by how affordable the whole thing way–this, compounded with my frustration at work, led me to start The Pin the Map Project; an online destination where I could divulge my love of food and travel and ultimately track my transition from a 9-5 cubicle in New York City to a life spent seeing the world.

It is a road I am still very much on and working at everyday, but The Pin the Map Project has made strides from where it started a little over a year ago and I am very excited to see what happens next!

2. How did you become a travel writer?
I studied journalism at Indiana University so already had a background in writing and an ingrained love for it. When I started blogging, I kept beginning and dropping my project because I couldn’t find a niche I felt truly inspired by. I had a fashion blog, restaurant blog, NYC blog and then eventually I was inspired to begin a travel blog, which was the winning choice.

To drive traffic to my blog, I began travel writing for other publications to build my writing portfolio and so became a freelance travel writer in addition to a travel blogger for The Pin the Map Project.

3. Your best resources for beginning travel writers?
There are many great reserources for beginning travel writers and I do mention many of them on my blog in my Breaking into Travel Writing 101 post. I also share tips for bloggers looking to start a blog and take it to the next level here.

One of my best resources when starting out was to write (admittedly unpaid) for sites like Thought Catalog, Elite Daily or Examiner that helped give my writing massive exposure, build my writing credits, drive traffic to my website and eventually lead me to assignments for bigger publications like FOOD & WINE, Matador Network, etc.

4. Any bloggers or creatives that you really look up to?

I really look up to Anthony Bourdain as a writer because he has such a way with words that his stories are always vivid, honest and candid. His is the type of writing that really transports a reader to a destination and makes them feel as though they are sitting across from him at a restaurant in Vietnam.

I have read his book, A Chef’s Tour, three times because it is such an inspiration in my own travel writing in the way he can capture the feel of a place without just listing adjectives.

unnamed-1

5. How many hours a week are you working on your business as a travel writer/blogger?

Haha good question! I think perhaps every hour I am working on my blog in some way—whether it be jotting down notes in my phone of potential story ideas, emailing tourism boards, seeing what other bloggers are doing in the space, getting in touch with PR contacts about opportunities to work with their brands, or simply adjusting the website layout.

Blogging is a real labor of love but I can honestly say I love what I do. I started The Pin the Map Project for many reasons and one of them was with the idea that if I couldn’t find my dream job, I would create it instead--I like to think I really did that.

No matter how many hours I spend writing, pitching, editing or networking it truly comes from a desire and want, not an obligation.

6. Advice that you wish you had when first starting out?

To be kind and patient with yourself; to understand that not every post will get a response, not every month will show a following. There are stories I write that I pour my heart into and they go unnoticed; and there are stories I whip out that take 5 minutes and get 20+ comments–it’s hard to say what will be successful and what won’t be when travel blogging.

But in the moments where it seems like your blog is just one of a million, those are the days that you need to be the kindest with yourself and keep writing for the love of writing.
7. What does your BellaVie – beautiful life look like and what do you inspire people to do?
A beautiful life for me is to see the world and all its wonders with someone I love and laugh with in tow. I really think life comes down to love and experiences and that at the end of the day the money we make, promotions we snag or material items we buy all fall to the wayside.

A happy life to me then is one that is rich in love, laughter and experience. If my writing can inspire readers to step outside their comfort zones and see the world now, then I have been succesful. For the longest time I believed travel was a luxury reserved for those with money or in retirement, but as I’ve learned, that just isn’t the case if you’re savvy to the tricks of saving on travel.

unnamedNikki is an independent travel journalist & blogger with published work in FOOD & WINE, Examiner, The Daily Meal, Matador and more. She shares stories from around the globe in hopes of inspiring readers to travel the world—one pin at a time at the Pin The Map Project.

When you are just starting out on your entrepreneurial journey, take a leap into a new adventure, or sharing your story with a potential client, did you know that the most important element in this whole adventure is OWNING what you do?

  • If you are obsessed with excellent design and branding. Own it.
  • If you hate the way education is being standardized. Own it.
  • If you spend hours trying to solve a problem for that website you’re building. Own it.

These are passions that take up your time, that you are interested in, and that you can solve people’s problems with – and… leave the world a better place than when you found it!

So how exactly do you own it?

Let’s get to the science of things, shall we? Everything I know about this arena I go to Amy Cuddy – social psychologist – to grab information and numbers from. I love her experiments and work in the self-development field.

In the animal kingdom everything is about opening up yourself, standing tall, and dominance – think of a peacock. The male will spread it’s beautiful plumes and strut it’s stuff. It knows it’s beautiful, so.. hello ladies.

Yes, this is to attract a mate. But! This subconscious and primal little awareness can change your brain chemistry to give you the feeling of power, confidence, and owning it.

It’s simply called Power Posing.

Take a stance like wonder woman. Hands on your hips, legs hip distance apart, standing tall, and take in a big breath. Stand like this for at least 30 seconds before a presentation, a pitch, an email, or a big decision.

You know what you just did to your brain?

– Your risk tolerance just went up

– Your testosterone went up by 20% – when practiced regularly

– Your cortisol level decreases by 15% – when practiced regularly

Risk tolerance is you being able to take on more challenges, confidence in decisions, and learning to say yes to opportunity instead of no because I’m scared or unsure of my ability.

Testosterone usually associated with masculinity and competition also goes up. But this is not just a masculine trait. Testosterone is that little hormone that helps with confidence, assertiveness, and decision-making.

Your cortisol level, what’s all that about you may be asking… That’s the hormone responsible for stress! So when you take a Power Pose you are lowering your stress levels. This is just from taking a pose, without necessarily thinking or visualizing. Just in how you carry yourself.

You changed your brain by holding a pose, this is why I add yoga to my daily routine. I stand in Warrior pose with my hands up in the air like I just won something, finished a big goal, or something positive like that.

I visualize that happening and really embrace the feeling of “I got this.”

Sound silly? I dare you to try it for the rest of your day.

Use this quick little exercise to give you the confidence you need on your next adventure, whatever it may be.

I used this exercise to visualize my journey to China and make it real. I cultivated the mindset of possibility. When I would share with people the story of why I would fly out to teach English and make a documentary about entrepreneurs and skipping college I had a lot of people I had to convince, pitch, and show the value in what I was doing.

That whole endeavor made me more confident in the skills I have now to share others stories. So you know that whole

“fake it until you make it” ideology?

Be it until you become it. It’s not fake – your brain says it is real.

So how do you feel confident?

Do a power pose, own what you do, change your brain and watch how the universe starts conspiring in your favor. Before you know it, you become it.

I have been working with the lovely Dianne from Blanche’s Place since last year on getting systems in place to support steady growth in her fashionable endeavors. Since working together Dianne has grown her reach on Facebook as well as created some amazing connections through Renaissance fairs, Independent Filmmakers, and dapper men and women from around the world.

So what was the turning point in getting more engagement and growth?

Dianne noticed that her clients and audience really really really loooooved Downton Abbey. You know…. that BBC show that is full of sophisticated and fashionable Brits.  A big fan of the show as well, what did Dianne do to contribute to her online community of clients?

Create Downton Abbey memes…. of course!

She took quotes from the show that highlighted fashions that she sells in her own shop.
Notice the meme below had 290 likes, 14 comments, and 31 shares? What happened here?

Screen_Shot_2015-02-24_at_11.35.14_AM (1)
  • This meme was professionally made.
  • The branding was ON POINT and CONSISTENT with Blanche’s Place fonts and colors.
  • This content was extremely shareable for the Downton Abbey fans that Dianne had.
  • Authentic enthusiasm was generated using with strategic design and value.

We created something great!

Now, we did get higher engagement on Facebook pages as well as likes and shares… but did these lovely eye catching meme’s bring traffic to her site?

Do you see those two little bumps in Blanche’s Place’s Google Analytics?
Those are the same dates that this meme was shared, and when looking where the traffic came from?
Facebook was at the top of the list.

Here’s why this meme worked so fabulously…..

  • It was relevant to Dianne’s Niche.
  • It brought a great amount of traffic to her site.
  • It increased her brand’s awareness.
  • She even made a sale from this one piece of content!

Key Insight:  Discover what your niche and audience really likes and offer that value to them in your social media.

How do you steadily grow your engagement and likes on your Facebook page?
You create amazing content, value, and do a little bit of market research.

It makes a difference when reaching out to sponsorships, partners, and your readers to see that you have a substantial amount of Facebook likes on your page. With a little bit of time, strategy, and problem solving you can organically grow your reach too!

Nina reached out to me at the end of 2014 and her vision of helping women feel healthy on their own terms really resonated. I was excited to start collaborating so we could work on getting her message out via Facebook and Twitter to a larger audience.

We talked strategy.
We started experimenting.
We even got some serious SEO research in place.

Within 2 months we went from 700 Facebook likes to 1,000+ with increased engagement and increased sign ups to Nina’s fabulous health programs.

Here’s a peek into the insights we gained…..

Content Creation:

  • Create amazing and engaging content that answers a question, entertains, or supports your readers/clients.
  • Use the word “you,” because in the end it really is about the reader.
  • Videos convert really well – especially if they are branded, professional looking, and answer a question or provides value to the people you are serving.

Social Media Analytics:

  • Check your Facebook analytics for a clear vision of who your readers are and when the best times to post are
  • Experiment with boosted posts – especially on videos that already have a high reach.  This is the best way to get the most bang for your advertising dollars.

Do you know what your life’s purpose is?  Many people despite going to school, working, and going through the daily motions of life still do not know what their purpose in life is.

As Adam Leipzig so simply states in his TED talk you just need 5 minutes to discover the purpose you are here on this planet for.

When I talk to women from around the world about starting their own location independent businesses – they are not exactly sure how they can start using something they love to create a lifestyle on their own terms.

They often will ask,

“What’s my life’s purpose?”

“How can I make a living doing what I love?”

So how exactly do you find your life’s purpose and create abundance for yourself and others?

1. Watch the TED Talk

Use this template and fill in the blanks, okay?

I am ________

I love _______ and I feel qualified to teach it.

The people I support are ________.

They want or need __________.

After working or collaborating with me they feel ________.

2. Write It Down.

Put it somewhere you will see in the morning where you wake up. Make your computer’s wallpaper state your life purpose out loud. Share it on Facebook and help your friends discover what their life purpose is.

Just make it stand at the forefront of your mind. This is your guiding compass in everything that you do.

3. Surround Yourself with Supportive People

Did you know that you are the average of the 5 people that you spend the most time with? So why not spend it with friends and fellow life purpose manifestas?

Your life purpose should light you up and give you the energy to move forward even when you don’t necessarily feel like it. But when you have a group of likeminded folks that support you, it gets that much easier to create from your life purpose.

Love helping others smile like Patch Adams? – Experiment, go to medical school, and create something even better The Gesundheit Institute

Painting and art more your game like Frida Kahlo? Breathe, create, and surround yourself with other artists to better your craft.

5. Always Serve Others

You turn on the news and you will see all the negativity of this world. However, knowing your life purpose gives you the unique perspective of how you can serve others and leave the world a little bit better than without you in it.

Your gifts, talents, passions, obsessions – that is what makes you uniquely you. No matter what people say – you’re work is needed in the world. And when your passion solves a problem for others and leaves them transformed, growing, or better off than before…
